GenCon plans

Hey guys, sorry I been gone a while. Been sick. I will try to post on my blog tomorrow, but I need to make this fast while I am thinking of it.

I will make it to GenCon this year, barring something short of a catastrophe. I will have, at least, after driving, registration, and food in the neighborhood of $600 for a place to sleep and random stuff. I was wondering about how much hotel rooms are, and if anyone wants to split one.

Got to go... (Actually posting from work) Talk to you guys soon I hope.

  • Rob - your best bet is to try to find someone who has a room already- because everything in the system is probably sold out or close to it now. I was on the minute that the hotel registration started, and I wound up with about my fourth or fifth choice in hotel.

If you can find someone who has space in a four-person room, it'll probably cost about $200 for 1/4th of the room for four nights.

I suppose the Gencon forum might be a place to find a spare spot in the room. I don't hang out on those forums, so I don't know. There are usually a few people looking for roommates on some of the RPGA yahoo groups as we get closer to Gencon (people who have friends whose plans fell through).

One thing that I haven't ever figured out, but maybe Kalen and/or Cody can -- is there a train system in Indy, and could someone get a remote hotel room that's near a train station? It seems logical, but I've never seen any indication of a train system that lets out near the convention center. Or, are the buses reliable? Trying to arrange some hotel off the beaten path might work and save a bit of money (I'll know you'll want to use as much of that $600 as you can for more fun stuff).

  • There's no train system in Indy, and from what I've heard, the buses are spotty at best. The cheaper hotels most people stay in for GenCon are out by the airport - about a 15 minute drive from the convention center, but then you've either got parking or taxi costs to consider. There are threads on the forums for people looking for roommates, tips for parking cheaper, and for people staying at the airport hotels to carpool into the con. I recommend checking that out (they're in the travel, housing, and dining section).

  • Oh, I forgot to mention that you can also call the housing bureau and get on the wait list for a close hotel. With the VIG program, GenCon reserves several rooms itself that it winds up not using, and there are always people that pick up extra rooms they don't need or who wind up not being able to go to the con.

  • I managed to find someone to room with. So I will be making it, as long as my car doesn't have any major problems with it. Getting it looked at tomorrow morning.
